NUTRITION STANDARDS
All reimbursable meals and snacks shall fulfill Federal nutrient standards as required by the U. S. Department of Agriculture Child Nutrition Program Regulations. There is a vegetarian and a salad option every day.
At this time, there is no food or beverages sold at KOKL besides schoollunchlbreakfast. Meals prepared for special events, including imu meals, feature fresh local vegetables and fruits, white meat and vegetarian options.
The following foods/beverages are prohibited at KOKL:
NUTRITION AND HEALTH EDUCATION
For nutritional guidelines, please refer to current USDA Dietary Guidelines.
All students are required to take one semester in health as per the state requirement. Required health classes include a focus on knowledge and skills that support healthy eating and are aligned with the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards for Health Education. Nutrition education is integrated into many of our elective courses as well as core subject courses. We also offer courses in organic gardening, massage, yoga, PE, Herbal medicine, ecology, agriculture, culinary arts, and many other topics related to health education.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
All students are required to complete 2 semesters of PE as per the state requirement. All physical education classes are aligned with the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards for Physical Education. Our Physical Education program at KOKL employs a variety of strategies to ensure all students complete their PE requirement. Over the past 6 years we have offered: calisthenics, yoga, running, hula, weight lifting, and traditional PE classes with team sports. We also have an after school program for sailing, canoe paddling, and surfing All students at KOKL must take and pass a swim course when they first enter the school if they are to be able to participate in these classes or swim during any field trips. Quality PE programs facilitate the development of physically active lifestyles and are needed to increase the physical competence, health related fitness, personal responsibility, and enjoyment of physical activity for all students so that they can be physically active for a lifetime.
KOKL does not use physical activity as punishment.
KOKL does not withhold opportunities for physical activity as punishment.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Regular professional development shall be provided to enable all applicable role groups to be active participants in providing healthy school meals within a comprehensive nutrition environment.

- Although students schedules may vary from year to year, all students at KOKL will participate in various health related classes, averaging about 200 minutes a week for grades 6-12.
- All students are able to receive a daily breakfast at KOKL if they so choose, as well as a daily lunch which includes vegetarian and salad options every day.

- Instructional Periods providing developmentally appropriate programs total a minimum of: 200 minutes a week for grades 6-12.
- Physical Education courses provide an environment where students can learn, practice, and are assessed on developmentally appropriate motor skills, social skills, and knowledge acquisition.
- Families have information to help them incorporate physical activity into their students' lives.
- All students have at least 40 minutes a day of supervised recess, during which they are encouraged to participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity.
- Students will not have more than two or more consecutive hours of inactivity.
- During mandatory school wide testing, students are encouraged to stand and stretch during all scheduled breaks
KOKL does not use physical activity as punishment.
